We’re Hiring: Senior Director, Entrepreneurs & Ventures

We are seeking a talented Strategist, program designer, and relationship-builder to direct UpStart’s transformative programs for social entrepreneurs and their ventures. The Senior Director, Entrepreneurs & Ventures (SD-EV) will oversee the creation, delivery and integration of best-in-class programs targeted to the needs of social entrepreneurs for each age and stage of organizational development. The SD-EV’s primary focus will be on the successful implementation of the Venture Accelerator, UpStart’s flagship program that elevates groundbreaking Jewish ventures to their next stage of growth. The SD-EV will also manage the other programs in the Entrepreneurs & Ventures (E&V ) Pathway supporting early- and later-stage startup organizations, including our Entrepreneur Sprints and programs targeted to the needs of our Venture Alumni Network.

The SD-EV is a full-time exempt position based in any of UpStart’s offices (NY, LA, Chicago, Denver, Oakland). This position reports to the Managing Director, Learning & Design and supervises the Director-EV and the Program Associate-EV to create, deliver and evaluate our portfolio of offerings for entrepreneurs and ventures.


The position oversees strategic direction, design, and delivery of UpStart’s programs for each age and stage of bold venture development–including the Entrepreneur Sprints, Venture Accelerator, and Alumni programs.


  • Drive UpStart’s strategy to support entrepreneurs and ventures
    • Ensure programmatic alignment with UpStart’s theory of change and benchmarks.
    • Working closely with the Metrics & Evaluation team, develop and implement formative and summative evaluation processes for the E&V Pathway.
    • Identify trends among participants and the larger field and determine new opportunities to strengthen the E&V Pathway.
  • Oversee the recruitment and selection process for E&V programs: Build an integrated system that identifies, attracts, and recruits entrepreneurs to ensure a pipeline of potential participants who best align with program criteria.
  • Oversee and develop high-quality curricula and programming for all E&V programs, based on best practices and assessed cohort needs.
    • Support–and partner–with the Director-EV to develop curriculum for all E&V programs, both in-person and virtual.
    • Manage the coaching process that provides customized support to entrepreneurs in the core areas of running, growing, and scaling their ventures, including identifying trends and opportunities for enhancement.
    • Expand the development of the Mentorship process by creating a purpose-driven plan to engage, match, and define the scope of work for mentors and mentees.
    • Participate in stakeholder engagement and partnership exploration activities, providing board presentations, funder and community engagement opportunities, and cross-functional collaboration with internal teams.
    • Partner with Community & Field (C&F) staff to create an impactful alumni program experience that meets the ongoing needs and interests of past participants.
    • Serve as a coach to several participants.
  • Engage in and facilitate effective cross-departmental projects:
    • Ensure timely submission of all funder reporting deliverables.
    • Partner with the Brand Strategy team to identify opportunities to tell a compelling story about our E&V programs and network.
    • Work with the finance and development teams to oversee all grant award processes.
    • Partner with Regional Directors to create programs for entrepreneurs & ventures that are responsive to the needs of their hub communities.


  • A passion for UpStart’s mission to dream, build, and grow bold initiatives that enhance the vitality of Jewish life.
  • Foundational experience with the majority of the following, with deep experience in at least one area: business or nonprofit strategy, leadership and management best practices, business model development, human-centered design, entrepreneurship, partnerships, governance, fundraising, and building a sustainable enterprise.
  • Front-line experience in business and/or the nonprofit world leading the strategy, design, and implementation of programs and/or organizations.
  • Excellent people, communication, time, and management skills.
  • Access to Jewish networks and an understanding of the national Jewish ecosystem.
  • Ability to adapt with resourcefulness, flexibility, and a positive attitude in an entrepreneurial culture.
  • Track record of exhibiting a high degree of professionalism and emotional intelligence.
  • Successful track record of managing and leading immersive and engaging educational programs.
  • 7+ years’ experience in entrepreneurship or non-profit work, or 5+ years’ experience with an MBA or related graduate degree.


  • Experience working in a dispersed team a plus.
  • Experience mentoring or coaching others in a business or nonprofit context, including mastery of the hard and soft skills associated with the work.

Our internal process from submission to offer will look as follows:

  1. A preliminary call will be scheduled with our internal recruiter.
  2. Candidates who advance to the first interview will meet with the Hiring Manager.
  3. Candidates who advance to a second round will complete an experiential assignment in advance of interviewing with two primary collaborators for this position.
  4. Finalists will participate in a third-round interview with the Hiring Manager. References will be requested of all finalists in advance of this final meeting.
